The Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC is also known under the name of cage fighting. The place where the fighters meet for combat is an octagon-shaped fenced area called the cage. This central area is four feet higher than the ground level for improved visibility during the matches. The very concept of cage fighting may sound barbaric and savagely violent, and all this used to be true in the early days of the sport. Cage fighting is specific to mixed martial arts, a combination of techniques from all the full contact combat sports.

Cage fighting improved in terms of fighters' safety after the official organization imposed some rules and regulations meant to reduce the number of injuries and give this sport recognition. The apparel has changed too for cage fighting. Boxing trunks and very tight shorts used to be very popular, and the same thing can be said about singlets and long pants. Nevertheless, things have changed and only approved shorts are now allowed for cage fighting. There are no more shirts, gis and long pants. No shoes still remains a major rule that has run since the very beginning.

As for victory in cage fighting, the end of the match is at the decision of a board of judges. It can result after the alloted time has lapsed and the winner is the fighter with the best performance, victory can also be achieved by knockout, submission or stoppage because one of the fighters is too injured or incapable of defending himself. Foul or illegal actions cause disqualification and the other fighter wins. Few women choose to participate in cage fighting although some have had great performances. On the average, the sport seems exclusive and targeting males in particular.

There are thousands of YouTube videos with cage fighting matches, and there are very numerous web pages that teach techniques, tactics and training methods for anyone who wants to take up mixed martial arts. Matches are organized for both amateurs and professionals, but what is more important is the legal or illegal background for such activities. Moreover, the cage fighting scene becomes the location for real betting businesses.
